Astak’s 5-Inch Pocket PRO eBook Reader Collaborates with Adobe Systems and Makes Its Debut

San Jose, California (PRWEB) August 7, 2009
Astak Inc.’s new 5-inch Pocket PRO eBook reader collaborated with Adobe Digital Editions to provide a strong contender against Amazon’s Kindle.
On July 30th, Astak officially announced that they acquired permission from Adobe Systems to install the Adobe Digital Editions firmware on their 5-inch and 6-inch devices. This new firmware will enable users to purchase and read copyright-protected eBooks in PDF format from major eBook stores such as Powell’s Books and Books on Board. Astak Inc. is only the second company to have obtained this firmware besides Sony.
Just like its 6-inch EZ Reader sibling, the 5-inch Pocket PRO’s greatest strength is that it natively supports more than 20 DRM-free formats. This feature allows users to read any non-copyrighted eBook available on the Internet, such as public domain titles from Gutenberg, which gives the user freedom to choose from hundreds of different eBook websites. With the wide range of supported file formats, users do not need to worry about compatibility issues between their documents and their eBook reader.
“We are very excited because the Pocket PRO will give customers greatest freedom of choice. Whether it’s classic titles or new releases, the customer can finally read it all on one device,” said Walter Shan, project director of Astak’s eBook Reader Department.
Other notable features of the Pocket PRO include PDF reflow which improves the readability of documents, and a text-to-speech function that reads documents aloud. It comes in six different colors, and has three or more font sizes to accommodate readers who like to read bigger text.
It is designed to be compact, sporting a 5-inch screen and weighing 6 ounces. The 8-level grayscale E-ink screen approximates the experience of reading printed text, so that users will not suffer from eyestrain after hours of reading. The internal Epson controller and a 400 MHz processor speeds up page turns.
The Pocket PRO comes with 512MB of memory, plus a SD card slot for additional storage capacity up to 16GB. It has a replaceable battery that lasts up to 8,000 page turns on one full charge. Plus, it can play MP3 music files while users read eBooks.
The 5-inch Pocket PRO reader will sell at a promotional price of $ 199, and is now available for preorders online at http://www.theezreader.com and http://www.astak.com. The new devices are predicted to ship out by the end of August.

Which is better? A tablet PC or an eBook reader?
Question by kassadumma: Which is better? A tablet PC or an eBook reader?
I am new to this kind of thing and know nothing about portable devices other than my Nokia 1280. For those who do not know the 1280, it is a black and white display phone with texting and calling as the only noticeable features.
I have a lot of Technical, Engineering, IT books and some novels, all eBooks in PDF format. I need want to buy a device that can read my books.
I have looked at some of the eBook reader options like the Kindle DX, Kindle 2, Sony PSR 650 and iRex iLiad.
Is it better to buy a tablet PC rather than to buy a eBook reader? What are the options in an iPad.

Better would be a hybrid device which would combine advantages of both.
E-Ink eReaders are limited to be black & white for now and they cannot handle videos. However, a new generation of eReaders starting from already released Nook Color from Barnes & Noble (which is a hybrid Android eReader/tablet device) do not have those limitations. Also, Nook Color has a new generation screen which is anti-glare coated and is better performing in sunlight than iPad’s. It’s much more than just an e-Reader but not a full tablet as it doesn’t have a camera (but so does iPad and it’s called a “tablet”). If all you want is to read novels, Kindle (or the original e-Ink Nook) might be better for you. If you want something more from your device at half of the price of iPad or Galaxy tab, then Nook Color is your best bet. Nook allows to lend books for 2 weeks to friends or to your other devices that run B&N app (PC, MAC, Android phones, Apple iPhone and iPad, etc.) Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for library ebooks and for renting text-ebooks.

Kindle v. Nook v. Sony E Book Reader?
Question by Tiffany: Kindle v. Nook v. Sony E Book Reader?
Hi everyone,
I’m going to college next year with an English literature degree, which means that I will be reading many, many books. I’m interested into getting an e-book reader in order to save on buying novels and books in the book store, having all of them in a light, portable device, and also for my own personal use for pleasure reading. I like how the Kindle has all of the classics for free or if not very cheap, and I hear the Sony E-reader is cheaper but there is not as big of a selection of books and they are more expensive, and the Nook black and white seems a lot like the kindle…I’m really not looking for something with all kinds of crazy Internet access because I have a good, new labtop and I don’t need it. I just want something that would not hurt my eyes, would have more availibility of books that I would need for cheap, and a good product.
I need some opinions, if you have a Kindle, Nook, or E-Reader can you give me some advice? I’d appreciate it, Thank you!

A friend of mine has Kindle and loves it, she gets to carry hundreds of books all at once in her purse.
Haven’t heard about the other two, so can’t say anything really about them.
I don’t use Kindle myself nor know the price, but if you can afford it I’d really recommend the iPad. It’s really comfortable for reading, gives a new definition to the digital library. A lit student like you will enjoy peering through book pages on the iPad for hours. There are also apps that you could easily install for exclusive access to the world’s best magazines and newspapers.
Sure, it does a lot of things your laptop can do like browse the internet, check e-mail, play music, edit and view documents and play games, but the experience is different. For instance, when you’re writing a big paper at home and want to sit at your desk with full concentration, you’ll want to do that on your laptop. But then you might also have days where all you want to do is to sit in the park and read your book, then out of the blue you just get this urge to write notes or even draft one of your assignments because you just got inspired with the most amazing words or ideas. In this situation I don’t think you’ll always want to have your laptop with you, it would be handy if you could just type it on your iPad. Kindle doesn’t have that feature. Sure, you can carry Kindle and a notepad, but if you write something on a notepad you’ll eventually have to type it all in again to hand it in as your assignment. Might as well go digital from the start, and do so in a compact format.
Good luck deciding
